Abstract

The International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) has suggested to the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) which shall meet again in autumn 2011 to consider a redefinition of the International System of Units (SI). In this new SI all the present seven base units will be defined in terms of a constant of nature. This lecture will present the proposed new SI and discuss the physics background.
